| Hiring an Attorney |
||||||||
| When you find yourself involved (or potentially involved) in a legal matter, you have a great deal at stake. It is important that you hire an attorney immediately and that you select an attorney who has experience handling cases similar to yours. Experience – You should select an attorney based on their experience with cases similar to yours. Someone with experience is more likely to also provide you with a realistic picture from the very beginning of what the ultimate costs of your case will involve. Being Comfortable – You will be best served by choosing someone with whom you feel comfortable with. An individual who feels comfortable discussing every detail of his or her case with the attorney allows that lawyer to be better prepared and able to represent you. Attorney Fees – Cases can be charged on a retainer basis (payment up front) or a contingency basis (a percentage of the recovery is paid at the very end of the case). The amount of your retainer and the ultimate cost of your case will depend upon several factors. Is your case a criminal or civil case? How complex is the case? In which county will the case be heard? Each case is different and has its own unique facts. Do not “Bargain-Hunt” – Searching for an attorney should not be handled in the same manner as a trip to your local discount store. Don't call 10 different attorneys and then go meet with whomever quoted you the cheapest retainer. Choosing an attorney simply because that person quoted you the cheapest fee can have serious consequences for you. Hearing the Truth – You should expect your attorney to provide you with both the strong and weak points of your case. Legal matters are rarely, if ever, open and shut cases. They are normally very complicated with multiple versions of what happened. Communication – You should expect your attorney to keep you advised of the status of your case. You should expect your attorney to return your telephone calls and e-mails within a reasonable amount of time. The attorneys of Pillersdorf, DeRossett and Lane feel that whether or not you hire us to represent you, you must consider all of the above before choosing an attorney that is right for you. |
